“Property Of”: Who Really Owns Whom?

Like many of you, I am the proud possession of a pet. A 3-year-old hound mix, in fact, pictured here with me nabbing a treat from behind my head. His name is Harley, and sometimes I call him The Boss, but not because he’s dominant or aggressive. Far from it---he’s playful and mild-mannered. Rather, the love he gives to and inspires in others captures everyone’s hearts, especially mine. And he is a shelter dog, adopted when he was four months old.

Welcome to a new blog from and about the North Country Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (NCSPCA) in Westport, New York. The NCSPCA is a no-kill shelter that cares for cats and dogs who have been surrendered, abandoned, or abused, serving all of Essex County including the Adirondack High Peaks and Champlain Valley regions. Our goal is to ensure that each animal gets a second chance — and sometimes a first chance — at a loving home.

In this blog I hope to acquaint you with my dog, amuse you with stories about other beloved dogs and cats, offer pet-owning tips, and provide you with information about the NCSPCA and its mission to make the whole of Essex County a safe and happy place for pets and for the people who belong to them.
