Summer Skating Starting Soon

June 6, 2011 - Christie Sausa
It's almost that time again....after the normal May hiatus, the ice is coming back in time for a new summer skating season. Check the Lake Placid Skating Site (link) for information. Adult Week is coming up first on June 12th, and June 23rd through 25th is the first Lake Placid competition of the summer, the Lake Placid Figure Skating Championships. Of course, don't forget about the weekly Freaky Friday event and Saturday Night Ice Shows, in which skaters training in Lake Placid can perform in front of an audience and hone their performance skills.

Speaking of Figure Skating, there is a movie being shown at the Lake Placid Film Forum (June 16th-19th) that might interest figure skating fans; RISE. Telling the story of the 1961 plane crash in which the entire US World team crashed en route to the World Championships, the film features such skating legends as Scott Hamilton, Peggy Fleming, and Michelle Kwan who comment on the impact of this tragedy on the sport. I plan on reviewing it for the Free George website (see links) sounds like an excellent film. For more information, on the Lake Placid Film Forum, see the link below.

That's all for now!

PS- for more about the history of figure skating in Lake Placid, check out my Adirondack Almanack story (link).
