Skating Updates-December updates

December 7, 2010 - Christie Sausa
Snow is flying in Lake Placid (about 9 inches of snow and counting) and the temperature is dropping which means one thing; the winter season is once again upon us. Here are some updates for the month of December (and the end of November too).

*On Thanksgiving weekend, Lake Placid was seeing stars for the 25th Anniversary tour of Smuckers Stars on Ice. Returning to the Olympic Center after a one-year hiatus from Lake Placid as a tour date, the show was headlined by 2010 Olympic Men's Champion Evan Lysacek, and 2006 Olympic Ladies Silver medalist Sasha Cohen. Returning to skate again were tour favorites Kurt Browning and Ekaterina Goordeeva. Hosting live was Scott Hamilton, who along with Kurt Browning welcomed the audience to Lake Placid. As always, there were alternating "serious" and "fun" programs; my favorite were Kurt Browning's "Steppin out of my Mind" in which he skates to music with his "thoughts" overlaying the music so the audience can hear what he is thinking while skating. Former LP News columnist and adult skater Barbara Kelly sums up Kurt Browning the best by saying "He is the Fred Astaire of figure skating".

Evan Lysacek, who started skating with SSOI last year for the "Stars of Vancouver" tour, skated dramatically to "Tango Du Roxanne" and to an inspirational "The Climb" by David Hernandez. It is easy to see why Lysacek is the Olympic Champion; his powerful jumps, speed, and power were a highlight of the show. (Check out the Lake Placid News article about Lysacek below).

Sasha Cohen, skating to "Nobody Knows" by Pink and "Mein Herr" by Liza Minelli, is still incredibly flexible and performing her signature perfect spirals.

Ekaterina Goordeeva, fresh off winning Battle of the Blades with hockey player Valerie Bure, skated one number and is still captivating.

Other cast members included Jamie Sale and David Pelletier, Todd Eldredge, Tanith Belbin and Benjamin Agosto, Michael Weiss, and Joannie Rochette.

*Now on to speed skating news; it looks like the Oval will be opened this weekend. It is already being spruced up; check out my Lake Placid Skater blog for photos of the improvements!

Enjoy the snow everyone!
