Whiteface attempt, take II
March 10, 2014 - Morgan Ryan
Took another stab at climbing Whiteface Mountain and skiing down the other side on the toll road. We came up just a bit short but had a heck of an adventure along the way.
First stop was Whiteface Landing on Lake Placid
This lean-to about a mile from the landing pretty much marks the beginning of the climb. It’s a solid 2.4 miles of steep uphill from here to the summit.
We battled through endless amounts of balsam fir and other plant life that had grown over the trail, and we had to break trail for much of the final mile.
We got as high as this first set of ledges above treeline and turned around. The guide book says that this is about .2 miles from the summit.
The clouds were starting to clear as we headed down but we had no time to stick around and wait for the views to open up.
It was a crystal clear, starry night as we skied out in the dark after a long and tiring 13-hour day.
We attempted this same trip a year ago with the same group. Here’s a report of that outing:
Who knows? Maybe we will give it another try next year. Third time's a charm?
